The lowdown on low NOx leglislation for Oil Boilers
Published: 07-08-2018
When the ErP Directive was introduced in September 2015, limits on NOx emissions for oil became mandatory. At the time though, the UK was exempt due to its heavy reliance on oil boilers and the fact it produces its own fuel, kerosene.
So, Worcester Bosch and other UK boiler manufacturers were given a three-year grace period to comply and quickly set to work.
What makes a low NOx boiler?
Low NOx boilers tend to be larger in size or have a different burner technology, making it tricky to achieve low NOx emissions while keeping the original footprint of a boiler, that I’m sure many of you know inside-out.
Thankfully though, our Greenstar range of oil boilers has achieved the lower NOx emissions levels without increasing the size of the boiler or integrating a modulating oil burner, which can be more complicated and expensive. The answer comes in the form of a hybrid burner.
How will our boilers change?
Even though the changes affect every oil boiler in our Greenstar range, the good news for you is that we’ve been able to achieve this performance improvement with just a few simple component changes to the design of the burner. For example, it now features a new and different combustion head.
Fear not, the burner’s appearance and layout remain unchanged so it is just as simple to work with as its predecessor.
Our main aim has been to achieve the results we need without affecting the familiarity and reliability of our products. It might have been a slow burn to start with but developing oil boilers, such as our Greenstar range, will play a key role in lowering NOx emissions and providing clean air.
